Today I treated myself to an all-girl’s-day after experiencing a bit of heartache. Although I was recovering from a slight hangover, some Yonige helped me for the first part of the day.
The funny thing about Yonige is that I couldn’t really take them too seriously at first. They had a good sound but, despite not being able to understand a lot of their lyrics, there was something strangely whiney about their songs that was a constant turn-off. But now, the joke’s on me: I ended up buying their latest album “Neyagawa City Pop”, which is damn excellent, my favorite song being “さよならプリズナー“
However, part-way through the day, I decided to give my TOTALFAT album “Fat” another chance, as I had gone through the trouble of buying it and hadn’t listened to it all the way through. It was one of those albums I’d bought on a whim, and I’m sad I never really gave the attention it deserved. During my long walk through the mall, I found a really catchy song, “Eyes“, that I’d proceeded to hum the rest of the day.
That song wasn’t the only thing I found that day, either. On the way to rent some horror DVDs, I passed by a free music festival in the park called PAPAFES. Who made me cross the street was, unfortunately, the final act: Band Harassment ( バンドハラスメント）And I say “unfortunately” because I would’ve loved to see the entire festival had I known about it!
Since I live in Nagoya and the band is Nagoya-based, they already have quite a following. That and, coincidentally, their name has been popping up in my recommendations. ‘Twas fate!! They describe themselves–or at least, in the pamphlet–as emo-rock. They remind me a lot of a cleaner My First Story (‘cleaner’ referring to the lack of screaming, not scandals. Haha!) I believe 「君と野獣」was the song I heard.
I don’t know if I’ll become a hardcore fan of these kids (it was mentioned that they’re all in their early 20s), but hearing some live music after a month of helping friends around Japan and stressing about boy-bullshit was extremely refreshing! ❤
